Did you know? Raise expectations… Students and employees will improve their game in response to a challenge. The sixth of the Seven Principles of Undergraduate Education encourages instructors to communicate high expectations … after all, if you expect more you will get more. As you begin this new semester, let your students know what you expect from them and ask them some questions about what they expect of you. Setting high expectations with energy, enthusiasm, and conviction will encourage your students to make that extra effort for greater success in your classroom.

Do this:

  • View this 3 minute clip from Stanford’s Education Corner … Be Fabulous.
  • Distribute the attached worksheet “Be Fabulous.”
  • Give your students time to work independently or in small groups to fill out their top 5 expectations for both students and instructors.
  • Discuss your expectations and give students time to share their ideas.

Add Experiences
For continued economic prosperity of the US in the 21st century, academic standards must be tied to the demands of the global economy. This year in the QT, we are going to encourage instructors to include relevant workplace experiences in their courses. We will share some ideas and suggestions on how instructors are calling on guest speakers, including workplace visits, assigning informational interviews, and building internship opportunities to better prepare their students to land great jobs.

Quik Quote: There is a clear correlation between teacher expectations and student achievement.
