Richard Chamberlin: Building a business from his childhood interests

Richard Chamberlin, a Saddleback College student and business owner, talks about his experiences with developing a business in the following interview:

What is your business?

My business partner and I developed a fitness business called, OCPersonaltraining. We help all ages of customers develop individual fitness programs. We work with customers individually and in groups in our garage and local outdoor areas. We also work for corporations, and we have developed after school fitness classes for the city of Ladera Ranch.

When did you become interested in fitness?

I started learning martial arts when I was about eight year's old. Within several years, I had mastered enough of the martial arts techniques to assist the teacher with classes. When I was 14 year's old, I started teaching martial arts classes at the studio, and I also included resistance training with my students to further their skill. When I started weight training for spring football, I enjoyed learning about fitness. I soon knew that I wanted a career in fitness.

How did you learn about personal training?

I became a certified trainer, while assisting diverse customers with fitness programs at the 24 Hour Fitness gymnasium. I completed many of my seven certifications from the National Association of Sports Medicine (NASM.org). This helpful association offers a variety of certifications, including how to work with specific individuals with diseases, such as diabetes.

What are some of the hurdles for starting your business?

I started working with a good friend/partner to develop the business. I didn't realize how many “hats” I was going to wear. I needed to find some funding, market to the community members, develop relationships with retail stores and other businesses for referrals. I quickly honed my organizational skills.

What are some of your accomplishments this year?

I personally have been involved in a fundraiser for “Walk against Breast Cancer.” I have developed accounts as a corporate trainer in many businesses. My partner has started working with a local organization in Ladera Ranch for the 2008, “Biggest Loser of Ladera Ranch.” We have been endorsed by many of the local businesses, as well as the city recreation program.

What would you tell other students that are trying to develop a business?

Write out a business plan and have it checked by people you trust. Measure your goals to see where the business is going. Business and creative ideas can quickly change, so have patience and check your business plan every 6 months to stay on top of things.

What are some of your next steps to help grow your business?

The next step is to grow our business model. We want to be viewed as community leaders to help promote a fitness revolution for all ages in our community. We will eventually expand the model to other communities.
