Jon Lyons: A love of music led to a radio internship for Jon Lyons

A decision to be a part of a radio station's focus group led Jon Lyons to an internship.

Why did you obtain a radio internship?
I really hadn't thought of an internship in radio. My current major is in Child Development. I had been thinking of becoming an elementary school teacher. However, I love music. I have a large collection of music, and I am always listening to music. My music hobby led me to the radio station.

What process did you go through for the internship?
The local alternative music station, KWOD - 106.5, asked for volunteers for a focus group to give listener feedback. I volunteered and came to the station for a group focus session. After the session, one of the managers asked if I would like to intern for the station, since I was knowledgeable and passionate about the station's alternative music. I hadn't thought about interning in radio, but it sounded interesting. The manager told me about Sierra College's work experience program, so I contacted Brook Oliver and enrolled.

What tasks do you perform in your internship?
I have mostly helped with the promotion of the radio station. Some of the promotional events included events at the local Sandbar Club, and the promotion of local movie premiers, and private music shows. Of course, I also have some office duties. I mostly enjoy the contact with the community members, and educating them about the music and the radio station.

What do you like about the industry?
I like the relaxed environment, even though there is a lot going on. The backstage is fun and the industry is somewhat glamorous. Radio is interesting, because there are so many different jobs within the industry. For instance, there are DJs, and also jobs within the Promotion, Sales, and Operations departments.

What have you learned through this experience?
The internship has opened my eyes to other career possibilities. Fortunately, I am able to take some time to explore careers at this time. Radio broadcasting seems to be a very interesting career. I will probably take some radio classes to explore my options. It is important for me to find a career that I will love!
